Equine Iridology

It has been said that "the eyes are the windows to the soul," and rightfully so. Looking into your horse's eye, you can tell right away if he or she is calm, excited, a little off or unhappy. Taking it a step further, a trained Equine Iridologist can take a closer look to see what the eye may disclose in a way of a horse's health. Iridology - the study of patterns, colors and marks in the iris to reveal existing or potential health challenges was the norm.

Dr. Bernard Jensen, DC, PhD, who began his career as a chiropractor and later became America's leading holistic nutritionist and Iridologist due to his own health concerns, introduced iridology to American in the 1950s. According to Dr. Jensen, "Nerve fibers in the iris respond to changes in body tissues by manifesting a reflex physiology that corresponds to specific tissue changes and locations." In Layman's terms, by looking at the markings in the eye, the Iridologist can reveal existing or potential health problems, including chronic and acute inflammation, old injuries and/or health issues, current health issues, the root cause of recurring issues, inherited weaknesses and strengths, structural misalignments, origin of muscle spasms, digestive issues and much more. Iridologists do not diagnose or treat diseases. Instead, they determine the areas that show lacking nutrition and/or irritation in the body.

With the information he gained throughout the years, Dr. Jensen developed the Human Iridology Chart that interprets the relationship between the iris and the body. Specifically, the belief is that each area of the body is represented by a corresponding area in the iris of the eye. For instance, if an issue occurs in the right leg, a white mark will show up in the right iris in the specific mapping. If the issue is in the left leg, the mark will show up in the left iris. These charts are the standard for Iridology and are used world-wide in Australia, Canada and other European and Asian countries. Dr. Jensen stated that "Nature has provided us with a miniature television screen showing the most remote portions of the body by the way of nerve reflex responses."

To understand this concept, we need to go back to the beginning ... In the embryo. According to Leanne Wrentmore, BSC (Hons), BTTA, Cert Equine Iridology, Cert ESEBT of Natural Horse Solutions, located in Oakham, Rutland, UK, at that point, the eye develops as part of the brain and later separates as the embryo continues to develop, remaining connected to the brain through the optic nerve. Changes in any part of the body or organs are then projected to the iris through the brain. During this time of stress, the nerve endings from the affected area start to recede, leaving the discoloration the Iridologist sees in the iris.

Mercedes Colburn, ND, PhD of "Through the Eye International," along with Dr. Dena Eckerdt, a graduate of the University of California School of Veterinary Medicine at Davis and in private practice since 1983, are credited with the mapping of the equine eye and the creation of the Equine Iridology Chart. Both Dr. Eckerdt and Mercedes have spent 10 years together researching and testing the validation of this chart, which has proven to be reliable. Dr. Ron Logan, Certified C.C.H.P., C.R.R.I.D. Reflexologist, Iridologist, and Herbalist, studied with Dr. Jensen in Switzerland and filled in the gap to the chart we now use at Your Health 321, LLC concerning the brain area. This area is very important as issues with the Pituitary and Pineal Glands, among other areas located in the brain, will show there.

Eye1The Equine Iridologist (EI) will take a picture of both eyes using a flashlight, bringing in the light from the side and covering the entire eye, illuminating it to show the depth and clarity. The eye itself is not smooth, like a marble. Instead, it has peaks and valleys which show up when the light shines on the eye. The EI will then transfer the pictures of each eye on a computer in order to read the markings that may appear in the iris. These markings and patterns that show up in the iris are compared to the Equine Iridology Chart where the specific area of the body is affected is identified. For example, a mark showing up in the right eye towards the bottom of the iris just before 6:00 would indicate a kidney issue.

With this information, the EI can then establish issues in the very early stages before they become chronic. Most disorders are not seen by the veterinarian until it has reached the chronic point, such as an impaction in the colon, resulting in a call to the vet to treat their horse for colic. During recovery from injuries, the EI is able to catch sight of any infections or irritations that may occur. Observing the issue in the earlier stages of degeneration allows the person the possibility of correcting it with a change of diet, nutritional supplement, corrective shoeing, chiropractic massage, intrinsic energy, essential oils, red light therapy or a combination of these methods.

Eye2Using Equine Iridology can be very helpful when looking at a prospective horse for your new purchase. The picture on the left shows a horse that had surgery for colic approximately a year ago. You can clearly see the stitch marks made from the cutting and suturing of the skin and the colon in the iris. The owner had purchased the horse with no knowledge the horse had surgery of any kind. After numerous bouts with colic, the owner called us in to see if we could find the underlying problem. Had the owner used an Equine Iridologist prior to purchasing the horse, she would have known about the surgery and could have inquired about any possible issues prior to her purchase.

eye3Equine Iridology is also very useful to identify issues in your own horse and to track the progress of an existing issue. Such is the case for the later when it came to Linda Parelli's beloved horse, Remmer. The top picture on the right was taken on October 11, 2010, approximately 2 weeks after remmer's injury to his tendons in his left leg. The accident completely severed on tendon and partially severed another. The red circle in the picture shows a mark that appeared in Remmer's left eye due to the injury he sustained. During Remmer's recovery, we were able to take pictures of his left eye on a weekly basis to keep track of the healing progress. As time went on, the weekly pictures showed the mark getting smaller and lighter. Looking at the bottom picture, taken April 6, you can see where the mark has diminished greatly, signaling that the injury has healed.
eye4 Remmer is now out in the pasture with the other horses galloping around and enjoy life once again.

Throughout the subsequent years, Equine Iridologists will have the opportunity to help hundreds, even thousands, of owners with their equine friends. To us, there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing an animal tolerating a problem to become a healthy, happy horse again. We all know that horse can't talk and tell us what is wrong, but Iridology provides us the ability to catch sight of the physical animal to observe what the tissue is revealing. These wonderful, loving horses will tell us what we need to know if we will only look into their eyes.

 Bio-Survey Compass

The Zyto Bio-Survey Compass reads the 400,000,000 impulses per second in your horse using the Galvanic Skin Response to detect nutritional imbalances.

The Compass machine acts as a lie detector - asking the body questions and analyzing the answers to compile a report showing specific herbs that can help your horse regain its health and vitality.

Combining the report and findings of the Equine Iridology reading, your horse will be on its way to Optimum Health!
